When to Use the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM Lens: My Go-To Scenarios

Last year, I embarked on a 5-month journey across Europe, armed with an array of camera equipment, including the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM lens. Surprisingly, this lens never clicked with me—I ended up shipping it back to the US halfway through the trip.
Fast forward to my recent one-month adventure in China, and everything changed. From night city views, golden hour scenes, dimly lit temples to indoor scenarios such as restaurants, shopping malls, boutique stores and dinner gatherings, the f1.4 aperture made low-light shooting effortless. I didn’t have to bump up my ISO too much, which kept my images clean and sharp.

Whether it was my kids wandering in the city street or a spontaneous local market walk in the crowd, the 35mm let me stay close enough to capture my family and kids while still including a bit of the environment to set the scene. The fast and reliable autofocus made this lens a joy for capturing smooth, cinematic clips, especially in dynamic settings like bustling streets or serene landscapes. Although I have to confess, I didn’t use this camera for videos because I brought my DJI OSMO Pocket 3 which took care of all the videos of this trip.
Pros and Cons of the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM Lens
Pros:
1. Low Light Performance
My top reason to use a prime lens over zoom is low light environments, particularly indoor scenarios. I almost always grab my prime lens when I am in a restaurant or on an evening walk. Different from any outdoor environment in the summer such as most of my photo scenarios in my Europe trip last year, we have many social gatherings with family relatives, friends and old colleagues that I haven’t seen for many years or even decades in this trip.
I’ve photographed group shots in the same indoor scenarios with both my 24-70mm f2.8 zoom lens and this 35mm f1.4 prime lens wide open, with two stops difference, the Sony 35mm prime definitely outperformed with lower ISO and less digital noise.
2. Outstanding Image Quality

3. Lightweight Design
At just 525 grams, it’s super portable for travel photographers like me. Compared this lens mounted on my Sony A7IV to my most used Canon set up: Canon RF24-70mm f2.8 mounted on my Canon R5, you can immediately tell the size difference. I mentioned this Canon camera and lens combo in this video and why it was best suited for my 5 month Europe trip instead of my Sony 35 mm prime.
4. Versatile Focal Length
It’s wide enough for landscapes and tight enough for portraits. The 35mm focal length was a sweet spot for many photos I took in the restaurant and city walk scenarios. Although in the past I typically would pick up my zoom lens for landscape photography, this Sony 35mm prime can still meet my needs to take landscape photos if I only want to carry only one camera and one lens for a whole day.It’s wide enough for landscapes and tight enough for portraits.

1. Premium Price Tag:
At around $1,300, it’s not an entry-level lens. But it’s still $1000 cheaper than the most versatile zoom lens 24-70mm f2.8 GMii. However, you can alway check the third party Sigma 35mm f1.4 which is 40% cheaper.
2. Fixed Focal Length:
If you’re used to zoom lenses, you’ll need to adjust to ‘zooming with your feet.’
3. Limited Weather Resistance:
While it’s weather-sealed, it’s not invincible in extreme conditions. I’d still be cautious in heavy rain or dust storms.

The Sony 35mm f1.4 GM lens has become an essential part of my gear, particularly for travel and candid photography. Its exceptional image quality, portability, and versatility make it a powerful tool for capturing the essence of any scene.
