4 Days Family Travel In Rome - 10 Best Photo Spots
Rome, the eternal city and capital of Italy, is a captivating blend of ancient wonders, Renaissance masterpieces, and vibrant modern life. Its UNESCO-listed sites, including the Historic Centre of Rome, the Vatican City, and the Colosseum, collectively showcase the city's unparalleled cultural heritage and enduring influence on art, architecture, and civilization throughout the ages. Capturing the essence of this ancient metropolis is sure to be a rewarding endeavor.
We went through 4 countries within 24 hours the second time since the beginning of our Europe trip this summer. But this time the 4 countries were completely different: Montenegro - Croatia - Italy - Vatican City.
Colosseum and Rome skyl
It was our second time in Italy after 2.5 months (check out our 1-Week Charter Sail In Amalfi Coast Italy and 5 days in Venice), and my second time in Rome after 19 years. My kids and I walked all over, reliving my memory of this beautiful city.
I remembered telling myself to visit Sistine Chapel when returning to Vatican City, as the line in my first visit was too long. Sadly the line was even longer this time, and my favorite Piazza San Pietro was even more crowded. We accidentally ran into Angelus of the Pope which was a nice surprise. I am not sure if I completely enjoyed the photo experience due to the crowd, but I sure enjoyed seeing Rome and Vatican City again.
My husband officially joined our trip on the last day, after an unexpected delay in the US. At this point, I had already traveled with our kids in Europe for almost 4 months. If I had to mention one accomplish in 2023, traveling with two kids in the hottest summer of the past 120 years must be it!
Logistical Tip
We split our four days between two accommodations.
👉 The first night in Monti district, within 10-15 minute walk to Roman Forum and Colosseum.
Monti is a historic district in Rome known for its charming cobblestone streets, vibrant atmosphere, and a mix of trendy boutiques, cafes, and traditional Roman trattorias. Home to iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, Monti offers a unique blend of ancient history and modern urban life.
👉 The following 3 nights in the Prati neighborhood with less than 10 minute walk to Vatican City.
Prati is a sophisticated and residential neighborhood in Rome, characterized by wide boulevards, elegant buildings, and a bustling atmosphere with diverse shops, restaurants, and proximity to the Vatican City.
Both neighborhoods would be excellent choices for anyone who wants to explore Rome on foot. I walked to all the following places with two kids. If it weren’t due to the unexpected thunderstorm, we could have walked to more places.

1️⃣ Colosseum
My favorite of the favorites in Rome. I couldn’t explain why I loved it the moment I saw it 19 years ago. I had never been a die-hard fan for history or ruins, but something just clicked with me.
The Colosseum, an ancient Roman amphitheater, stands as an iconic symbol of Rome's grandeur and architectural prowess. With its colossal structure, it narrates tales of gladiatorial contests and historic spectacles, captivating visitors with its enduring legacy as one of the world's greatest cultural landmarks.
2️⃣ Roman Forum
Adjacent to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum is a captivating archaeological site filled with ancient ruins.
Capture the juxtaposition of ancient columns against the backdrop of the modern city for a sense of Rome's layered history.
3️⃣ Pantheon
The Pantheon, with its majestic dome and oculus, is a masterpiece of Roman engineering. Visit during daylight to capture the sunlight streaming through the oculus or at night when the Pantheon is beautifully illuminated.
4️⃣ Trevi Fountain
Join the crowds at the Trevi Fountain to capture the magic of this Baroque masterpiece. Early mornings provide a quieter atmosphere for stunning shots of the fountain without the usual hustle and bustle.
5️⃣ Spanish Steps
Climb the Spanish Steps for a panoramic view of Rome's rooftops. The steps themselves, adorned with azaleas in the spring, offer a charming setting for candid shots of locals and tourists alike.

7️⃣ Vatican City
This was my top favorite place during my first visit to Rome 19 years ago. That’s why I chose to stay in an airbnb next to Vatican City this time, so we could walk over and see it everyday!

The sheer grandeur of the St. Peter's Square and the architectural details of the St. Peter's Basilica provide ample opportunities for awe-inspiring photographs.
On our first visit, which happened to be on a Sunday, we encountered Angelus with Pope. It was a phenomenal event with music and walking ceremony.
Mind my ignorance, my kids were given the flags one evening and joyfully waved them everywhere on the square. I wish someone could educate me what the flag meant.
8️⃣ Villa Borghese
A magnificent 17th-century estate, Villa Borghese captivates with its expansive gardens, elegant architecture, and art collection, including masterpieces by Bernini and Caravaggio housed within the Galleria Borghese.
This enchanting retreat provides a haven of tranquility where visitors can stroll through manicured landscapes, admire classical sculptures, and revel in the cultural treasures within its opulent villa.
If you want a moment of peace away from the hustle and bustle of the other attractions mentioned, or some shade to escape the heat, this could be a great stop.
9️⃣ Piazza Venezia
Piazza Venezia is a bustling and iconic square dominated by the imposing Victor Emmanuel II Monument, offering a grandiose focal point in the heart of the city.
Surrounded by historic buildings and lively traffic, the square provides a dynamic intersection of ancient and modern Rome, attracting visitors with its architectural splendor and historical significance.
Make sure to walk up to the rooftop for panoramic view of the city. It was crowded as usual, but the spectacular view, especially during sunset, was worthwhile.
🔟 Campidoglio
Designed by Michelangelo, Campidoglio is a historic hill in Rome adorned with the elegant Piazza del Campidoglio, featuring the iconic equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and a harmonious blend of Renaissance architecture.
This cultural hub offers a captivating view of the Roman Forum and serves as a testament to Michelangelo's artistic brilliance in city planning.
