Day 15 – Going To The Sun Road And St. Mary Lake

It’s finally the moment!  Here we are – Glacier National Park.  Nothing could hide nor express my excitement.

Day 15 - St Mary Lake Glacier National Park-001.jpg

We started our drive from Going To the Sun Road, did an easy 5-mile hike along Lake McDonald, and another 3-mile hike at Logan Pass to see the Hidden Lake.  By the time we arrived at the most photographed St. Mary Lake, it was already after 7:30pm.  Perfect timing, again, for sunset photography.  Although the renowned Sun Point by the lake was closed due to road construction, we managed to find a quiet lookout over the Wild Goose Island.

It took me one hour (from 7:30 to 8:30pm) to stand in awe viewing the subtle flow of sun beam over the cloud, until my camera could no longer capture any colors other than the icy blue of the glaciers and the clouds.

Tip of the Day

I was lucky to be the 2nd to set up my tripod. Big lesson learned from my previous national park trips for sunset photography – no matter how fast you can set up your tripod, in order to get the best view and composition, you do need to beat the crowd and arrive early, even that means you have to wait and do nothing for an hour.  In the past I took my chances, but there’s no way I want to miss the good spot at Glacier National Park this time.
