Inspiration From Horace

Recently I’ve received a series of email notification about a friend’s adventure travel website and videos. Every time I clicked on Horace’s travel slideshow, it was an immediate inspiration. I met Horace almost 10 years ago back in Shanghai, when he was in charge of a major US-invested manufacturer in China. An American by blood but probably more a Mexican at heart, Horace has spent his 40+ years professional life in three continents, and is one of the most well traveled people I’ve ever known.

I still remember back in the summer of 2001, I met Horace at his retirement home in Tampa, Florida. We went through 17 rolls of pictures he took in Cuba. Later I was also lucky to receive 80 music CDs Horace compiled from his over 2000 CD albums. I am not sure whether that was the start of my photography adventure and the entry toward the real global music, but it certainly inspired me more than I probably knew myself. What’s more important, Horace is the most optimistic and happiest person I know. His passion in photography, travel and food, his knowledge of music and language, as well as his life wisdom and energy are simply extraordinary.

Over the past few years, I have repeatedly pondered on my definition of “success”. Sometimes I wonder, if a life like Horace’s is what I would like to look back 30 years from today… I certainly wish, by all means, I would feel young at heart, and energetic enough to see the world and learn new things every day, just like Horace does.

I’ve jotted down all the 9 photo slideshows Horace uploaded to YouTube.com. Just to remind myself to go back and look whenever I need a source of inspiration.
